A cancer survivor who is registered disabled and a former member of the British Army were the overall champions at the 2026 BPA Rising Stars and Masters Allstars Championships.

The event, at Brierley Hall Civic Hall in the West Midlands, featured two contests.

Rising Stars was exclusively for first timers, giving them the opportunity to have a go at competing against other stage novices.

Masters Allstars gave competitors aged 35-plus the opportunity to line up against people of a similar age.

Here’s how the action unfolded.

MEN’S CLASSES

Mathew Barry, an ex-rugby player from Merthyr Tydfil who left the army 10 years ago, was the star of the show. Mathew started his day by winning masters bodybuilding aged 40- 49 category, which was arguably the toughest of the day. The six-strong line-up included the monstrous Jim Georgiou, whose imposing size draws eyes as soon as he walks on stage, and four more outstanding physiques.

But none could match Mathew’s condition and balance. His thick, dense 91kg physique was impressively complete from all angles, making him the standout winner. He then went on to win the over-85kg bodybuilding class and then defeat six other class winners in the overall line-up to take home the overall champion’s sword.

Mathew, 47, who now works as a health and safety officer for a film and TV company, said:

“This is my first overall. I’m in shock because that over-40s class was tough.”

In the 50-59 years old masters bodybuilding, big Nick Lewis overcame the well-defined Sean Ferguson. Over 60s winner Shaun Thomas presented a polished and complete physique. Shaun is one of the most accomplished bodybuilders in his age group in the country.

Rafal Kwiatkowski overcame Christopher Shaw in under-85 kg bodybuilding and Paul King was the pick of four competitors in classic physique.

Men’s physique saw Shiraz Mirza return to the stage for his 50th competition at the age of 50. Remarkably, Shiraz didn’t compete until he was 46 but he seems to have quickly worked out how his body works, as he always turns up looking fresh, lean and ready. Shiraz won the over-50s and the open height class.

Mark Winder was the other big winner in men’s physique. He took the five-man 40 to 49 years old class and then won the fit model class to double up.

Martins Laksevics took the to 35 -39 years old line-up and Rowan Logue’s thickly muscled upper body and impressive abs won the novice men’s physique division.

WOMEN’S CLASSES

Bodybuilding has a habit of throwing up remarkable stories, but few compare with that of Rita Jayne Trotter’s route to the stage.

Rita was diagnosed with cervical cancer five years ago. After overcoming the disease, she suffered an infection when she had a biopsy for her annual screening in 2024. The infection spread to devastating effect, killing the nerves from the knees down, meaning she has no feeling in her lower legs.

Yet remarkably she became a health coach and personal trainer and now a champion bodybuilder. Weighing 54.8kg and standing 156cm tall, she won the trained figure class and then the overall title, displaying outstanding muscular curves. If that weren’t enough, she also won the best presentation award.

Rita, 36, a mother-of-three who is registered disabled, said: “This means a lot. It shows you can be told you’ll never work or compete again and still get on stage and win. Don’t say ‘no’ to yourself just because life throws you challenges.”

Her biggest rival for the overall title was fellow figure competitor Laura Wilkinson, who had never been on stage at the start of the day and ended it looking like she belonged on it.

Laura picked up two trophies in the Rising Stars and then defeated four rivals in the Masters Allstars figure over-35

She has a wonderful structure with narrow hips, around which she has sculpted a wonderful shape, and was tight enough to show it to best effect.

In bikini, Sam Popplewell’s shapely and athletic form won the 40 to 49 years old class as well as the tall class. Alanna Groom took the short height class and Kelly Sansby claimed the sash and tiara in the fit model line-up.

Misty James won the fit model and bikini categories in the Rising Stars — she looked perfect for the class and has a bright future.
